Pretty self-explanatory--M*A*S*H rules!

Obsessed as I am now with finding new things to post here, and having concluded the run of episode adverts I had, I went searching for M*A*S*H-related newspaper articles.

This one is, of course, all about McLean Stevenson's final episode on the show. This article ran the day of "Abyssinia, Henry"--March 18, 1975--which means people read it before the episode in question aired.

Now check the copy, especially the last line: they give away the ending!! One of the biggest shocks ever delivered by a TV show, and this newspaper article gives it away to anyone familiar with the movie Mr. Roberts. I cannot imagine how furious I would have been, either as a viewer or a member of the M*A*S*H staff--if I had seen that. And since a lot of these types of articles were written by the AP or a similar outfit, its possible this piece ran in other newspapers, as well. Sheesh!


I'm happy to report I found quite a few interesting(?) newspaper articles related to the show, so check back here often as I'll be posting them regularly!

M*A*S*H Ad: "AfterM*A*S*H"

I know CBS meant well, but re-running the classic "Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen" just one week before the premiere of AfterM*A*S*H was really putting the latter show behind the eightball.


This is the last "M*A*S*H Ad" in my collection; I hope everyone had as much fun seeing these pieces of 4077th Obscura as much as I did!

M*A*S*H Ad: "Springtime"

I find it interesting that the write-up bothered to mention that guest-star Mary Kay Place co-wrote the script of this episode. Pre-auteur TV, scriptwriters' existence were barely acknowledged.

M*A*S*H Ad: "Our Finest Hour"

M*A*S*H's one and only "clip show."

M*A*S*H Ad: "Oh, How We Danced"

"Klinger catches it surreptitiously on tape"? Er, no...other than that, pretty good description of the episode!

M*A*S*H Ad: "The More I See You"

Not an ad, exactly, but who cares, especially when discussing one of my all-time favorite episodes...

M*A*S*H Ad: "Morale Victory"

What is it with the Klinger-in-a-tux shot??

M*A*S*H Ad: "Heal Thyself"

For once, a pretty accurate and non-goofy description of the episode!

M*A*S*H Ad: "Letters"

A generic picture, but a very charming one!

M*A*S*H Ad: "Bottle Fatigue"

Ironic they would use a still of a pickled Winchester (from the episode "Mr. and Mrs. Who?") in an ad for a show about Hawkeye quitting drinking. And what happened to B.J.'s mustache?

M*A*S*H Ad: "War For All Seasons"

"Happy Fun New Year" feels like a tagline that was translated into another language, and then back into English...

M*A*S*H Ad: "Lend A Hand"

"Hawkeye Missing" is more than a little misleading...and check out that groovy outfit Dr. Borelli is wearing!

M*A*S*H Ad: "Period of Adjustment"

Oh man do I love that shot of B.J....

M*A*S*H Ad: "That Darn Kid"

I love the idea of 20th Century Fox sending out promo stills of the goat.

M*A*S*H Ad: "The Yalu Brick Road"

This ad is clever, if awkward...they took a shot of Klinger from Season Eight's "Too Many Cooks (when he changed the Mess Tent into Chez Klinger) and used it for this episode, which, plot-wise, sort of sounds like it matches.

Hawkeye, for his part, just looks annoyed.

M*A*S*H Ad: "Guerilla My Dreams"

It took me a minute or two to figure out what episode they were talking about here...then I saw that small shot Mako in the center, which would mean this was for Season Eight's "Guerilla My Dreams." Not the most accurate write-up...

M*A*S*H Ad: "The Price"

A very silly write-up for what was one the show's more serious episodes. I guess the copywriter just couldn't resist.

M*A*S*H Ad: "Rainbow Bridge"

"And almost start World War III" is a little much...

M*A*S*H Ad: "Good-Bye, Radar"

Kind of an odd description of the episode, but thank goodness we know who played "Hondo"!

M*A*S*H Ad: "Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen"

Not sure when this blurb is from, presumably its sometime around late 1983 or 1984, when some stations were re-running the final episode. The blurb itself is remarkably well-written; methinks who ever wrote it was a M*A*S*H fan.

What I also find interesting is that still of the four doctors--I've never seen that particular promo shot before. Its not a scene from the show, so its some sort of staged PR piece.

B.J. looks appropriately sad, Hawkeye looks...kinda manic, actually.

Apparently the joke Hawkeye and Trapper heard was so funny they kept laughing all the way into the next episode!

This is one weird ad...picture and copy! Would you watch this series?

M*A*S*H Ad: "Officer of the Day"

An ad from one of my all-time favorite episodes. Bonus: clip out the Hawkeye and Trapper stamp and save 'em all!

M*A*S*H Ad: "Are You Now, Margaret?"

You could argue Hot Lips should be front and center on this one, but otherwise this ad is fairly accurate.

Should "Commies" really be capitalized?

Hot Lips gives this episode the thumbs up!

Ashamed as I am to admit this, I cannot for the life of me figure out which episode this ad is referring to! Anyone have an idea?

M*A*S*H Ad: "Back Pay"

If you can forgive Hawkeye's odd positioning, this ad works relatively well--they even worked in Col. Potter's disapproving look!

M*A*S*H Ad: "Life Time"

This episode is so special B.J. shaved his mustache off just for the ad!
